MORE than 50 protesters turned out for a meeting of meeting of Stroud Town Council's consultations committee to discuss the Baxter's Field plans.

They filled the room at the Conservative Club which was used because of the interest in the proposals.

Craig Lippett from Slad Valley Action Group said: "We aren't Nimbies. Stroud needs homes and jobs. But this is not the right site. We want to do the right thing for our children."

The town council opposes the scheme and has employed a planning consultant to prepare a letter of objection to be sent to the district council.

It would affect the area's character, is outside the town settlement boundary and there are road issues, says the town council.

Committee chairman Coun Kevin Cranston said other sites should be considered.
