DEVELOPERS trying to build "later living" apartments on the prominent Robert Timms garage site have lodged an appeal with the Secretary of State.

McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd have made the move after the Stroud District Council failed to make up its mind about whether or not to permit the scheme within the statutory period.

The decision about the proposal for 32 flats for people aged over 60 on the Cainscross Road site in Stroud was delayed because of the complexity of elements of the scheme, a council spokesman said yesterday.

McCarthy & Stone, however, have said the redevelopment of Timms, which is currently a used car dealership, was in accord with the Local Plan.

There was earlier concern from local people that the apartments closeness to the canal might impinge on reopening of the waterway.
