Ten of Gloucestershire's best places to rent

Full of beautiful places to live, weighing up some of the best places to rent in Gloucestershire could be seen as somewhat of a challenge.

Cheltenham, Gloucester, Tewkesbury, Cirencester, the Five Valleys and Forest of Dean all boast their own unique appeal. Here we take up that challenge and showcase 10 of the best places to rent in the county.

We used figures from property search website Zoopla.co.uk and our own criteria which includes strong nearby schools, transport links, low crime rates and quality surroundings, to pick 10 places that show off the best of what the county has to offer.

Speak to lettings agents in Gloucestershire and they will tell you the rental market continues to grow at a fast pace, despite increasing rental prices. Tenants now expect properties of the highest quality and matched with a strong buy-to-let market and superb surroundings, they are spoilt for choice in the county.

There is plenty of variety in Tewkesbury, for example, which boasts many Tudor buildings and of course, Tewkesbury Abbey. Zoopla.co.uk gives it a rating of four out of five and a score of 78 per cent, one of the highest on our table.

Meanwhile, the pretty Cotswold town of Tetbury is near to Prince Charles' Highgrove home. It is full of independent stores and attracts many tourists without impacting on its community feel.

Picturesque Painswick is another that makes our list. The town is full of charm, has a number of well-known faces nearby, including author Jilly Cooper and hosts several events including the Wearable Art Festival.

Tivoli is a hugely popular area of Cheltenham, about 15 minutes' walk from the town centre. Full of period properties, it is close to Bath Road with its shops and quality pubs.

According to an estate agent in the area, a two-bedroom house there will cost about £900 a month while a three-bedroom would set you back between £1,200 and £1,500. A one-bedroom flat would require around £550 a month, while a two-bedroom would see you handing over roughly £750pcm.

Abbeymead, Highnam and Upton St Leonards have a good choice of schools and good transport links.

Zoopla.co.uk gives them a four-star rating and score of 76 per cent, 78 per cent and 75 per cent respectively. The average rental value is similar in all three areas, although slightly cheaper in Highnam, where it is £693 per month.

Abbeymead and Upton St Leonards sit south-east of the city centre, while Highnam is to the north-west.

Bishop's Cleeve lies at the foot of Cleeve Hill with some strong schools in and around the village.

It boasts a good number of shops and supermarkets and has strong transport links, sitting close to the M5.

    Well i think if they would be entilled to some sort of help with their rent depending on their income and savings also council tax help again depending on their income and savings. They would still get the winter fuel allowance,plus the £10.00 xmas bonus which everyone seems to get except the unemployed who claim J.S.A. And of course the £25.00 everytime the temp goes below a certain temp for i think 7 days.

    I don't rent but what I've always wanted to know is what do people do that rent privately all their life when they retire and stop earning. For example: suppose a couple age 45 rent an average house for £750 a month for 20 years, where do they live when they retire and are getting not much more than that in their state pensions? (approx £100 a week per person) how can they afford to continue to rent and pay council tax, utility bills, food, phone bills, run a car or two?
